Brake problems - 1989 240 wagon 200 1989

This weekend I ovehauled the brakes on my 1989 240 wagon - it needed 3 new calipers, 2 new rear rotors and new pads all around. I did all of this without any apparent problem but I cannot seem to bleed the brake system to get firm pressure back to the pedal. I have tried 5 times now - both with and without a helper. I have bled brake systems a number of times before and have never had a problem like this.

I can't see any leaks anywhere.

Is it possible that the master cylinder coincidentally failed at the same time? Is there any way of testing this? When I push the brake pedal down it kind of "catches" about half way down - I don't know if this is significant. Also if I pump the brakes with the engine running there is a drop in engine revs - is that a sign of a bad booster?
