My '87 became difficult to start after heatsoaking when Hall effect sensor in the distributor became faulty. Exact symptoms you mention, very inconvenient. Eventually it'll quit entirely so best to fix before that leaves you stranded. It can be replaced separately though I've noticed a lot of folks say it's easier to just get a rebuilt distributor.
