'86 240 DL Transmission 200

Hello All,
I'm a long time driver of a 122 and recently needed a cheap car to get around in, so I got an '86 240 with 185k, automatic. I noticed that at 60+ mph, the thing seems wound up, and could use an upshift. After counting the gears, I think I only hear 3 gears from start. I've pressed the overdrive button and hear a faint click of a relay somewhere, but no change in driving (I think).
Can anyone tell me how many 'normal' gears there are in the Automatic, and how the Overdrive works? The overdrive light does not come on the dash.

Thanks,
Sean
