Bendix vs. Grilling 700

I have a '91 740 Turbo Wagon. A recent brake job (replace pads, turn rotors) -- revealed torn boot, drivers side. Also, pads on that side were much more worn than pads on pass side. Talked to Volvo guy who serviced car for former owner. Sez that Bendix brakes are terrible and should swap out with Grilling. I am fixing to rebuild the Bendix caliper but he says it's not worth it. Still, a $30 rebuild kit is a lot cheaper than a $500 replacement. So, two questions: (1) what is the deal with this bendix vs. grilling argument? Any merit to it or just noise? (2) Assuming a replacement is in order, will the outer bracket for Bendix support inner caliper unit for Grilling or will I have to swap the outer bracket out as well?

Thanks ya'all -- looking forward to exchanging good Volvo information on this site!
