Wet carpet 200 1989

I drove my wife's 1989 240DL to work today and found that the carpet on the driver's side front was very wet. We have had a lot of rain over the past several days, but the windows were not left open. I used the shop vac tonight and sucked out at least a pint of water. I put the car in the garage with fans blowing through it and I will pull the carpet in the morning to try and keep it from stinking.

I looked under the hood and did not see any obvious things (missing grommets, etc..), and the last time I was under the car there was no rust. The car is well maintained and in good condition, so this is a unpleasant surprise. Does anyone have any thoughts on where to start looking/sealing?

Thanks in advance.
