'85 240 and '86 740 rear ends the same???????

You should be able to find (under the crud) a tag on the rear axle with a number like "30XX" or "31XX" meaning it's a Dana 30 - the basic series of axles ought to be the same, and the guts ought to work. That said, I'm not 100% sure. You'll have to see if the sensor looks the same when you pull it.

And with the track record of 740 dashboards, I'd suspect the speedo or wiring to it long before I'd guess it's the speed sensor.
