I would appreciate any help you could give me.
I purchased a '84 240 Turbo Wagon a year ago in great mechanical and body condition. I've had no major problems with the car (recently timing belt broke).
After a hard drive to Lassen volcanic park (loaded car with camping gear, three people, 8000 feet climb, 60-70 mph uphill) my problems began. I noticed that the turbo boost gage wouldn't come back all the way down (to 0, bottom of the black area in the boost indicator) as it used to do before. The car kept running fine but I have lost the old two stage boost it had before. Also, in the mornings the car starts without hesitation, but after 30 to 60 seconds idling the rpm go down to 900 rpm (it stalls a bit) and immediately the engine surges (by itself) and the rpm go back up to about 15000 rpm (this decrease in rpm and surging goes on until engine warms up). When the engine is warm (after driving 30 min or so) the idle is way too high (stays constant between 1300 to 1500 rpm).
Nonetheless, the car runs great. I just came back from a 600 mile trip and I got good mileage (23.5/gal at 70 to 85 mph) and have no problems at all. The car apparently had some equipment installed before I bought it that increases the boost as compared to factory turbos. Before, when I step on the gas pedal (say about half way), there would be a lag of few seconds followed by a very strong boost (needle half way into the yellow boost gauge). If at that point I floored the gas pedal I would get a second strong boost (needle close to the red). Now this "two stage boost" (I am not sure if I am using the right terminology) is gone. Now, I get boost but it is suttle and continuous and not as strong as before.
I checked and tightened all hoses, clean the throttle body with intake cleaner for fuel injected cars, and changed the gas filter (after running fuel injector cleaner and two full gas tanks). Do you guys have any other suggestion? Any help would be appreciated.
