SQUEAL - BEARING? A/C? (940T) 900 1994

Sounds just like bearing squeal; but I can't trace it directly to a bearing yet because is intermittent. Other peculiarties: occurs when A/C is on ONLY, and starts a moment or so after the radiator cooling fan switches on. I'm not exactly sure how the A/C works, but these symptoms suggest that the cooling fan switching on is associated with a valve opening and refrigerant flowing thru the cooler, raising the load on the compressor and causing the "marginal" compressor bearing to squeal.

If this isn't likely, does anyone have another idea? If it is the A/C compressor, is it cost effective, or even possible, to replace the bearing at home w/o special tools (particularly given refrigerant recovery rqmts these days)?

Thanks.

P.S. Is the refrigerant in this car R-134 or R-12?
