prepump keeps failing in 1981 245 200

Anyone have any tips on this? I have had two prepumps installed in my '81 245 over the last two years. last week the main pump started getting loud again. I believe the prepump (intank) fuel pump stopped working. Any suggestions on what might be causing it to fail. I saw the tip on swedishbricks about soldering up the fuel pump relay. I pulled the fuse to the prepump and tried starting and the sounds - sounded the same with an with out the fuse. can you hear the intank prepump from inside the car? In the past when it went, the main pump got a lot louder. Would it be worthwhile to replace the relay? I read the standard test for the prepump is to listen thru the gas tank filler neck for the pump sound. Can i do that myself with the key in the aux position? any tips would be appreciated. Thanks
