Air flow sensor slow to drop 200 1979

Just took my manifold off of my 79 245 K-jet. What a gunky mess! Intake manifold filled with a gunky carbon layer. In manually testing the Air flow sensor, It takes about 4 seconds to drop after pulling it up from the bolt on top. It should drop right away, correct? I'm sure its pretty gunkyÃunderneath, is there way to clean this without taking the unit off of the car, can I spray carb cleaner in there, and just try wiping off the residue?

How do I clean the intake port on the head? worried if I clean with a rag, I'll send some dirt further into the head.

I've had a "no start" on this car for a while. I have spark, gas was making its way to the cold start injector. Did trying to start this car so many times make the intake system gunky. Or did the bad operation of the air flow system lead to the no start situation?

A week or so before the car quit running, there was a what sounded like a backfire into the intake system, and it blew one of the vaccum hoses off (the one that goes from the idle air valve to the intake manifold).
