no power/backfires/intermittent problem 200 1988

I have a 88 240dl, I was traveling from seattle to LA rejoicing in the fact I just hit 250,000 miles and I hit a bump on the road and the car lost power and started to backfire and bearly made it up hills and is just acting like I got some real bad fuel. I added some fuel injector cleaner and preium fuel to no avail. I have had this problem once before I seem to remember it was a fuel problem or an oxygen sensor but I forget my repair book is in seattle and I can't spend a whole lot of money on a mechanic. am I on the right track? I noticed some posts on oxygen sensors is it a common problem? can I bypass the sensor to determine if it is infact the problem? any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
