stiff steering on 1990 240 after installing Bilstein struts 200

After installing a new set of Bilstein struts on my 1990 240 - it feels like steering is much stiffer. What could be causing this? Could I have overtightened the upper strut nut causing the strut upper bearing plates to bind??
