740 Turbo Intercooler - Smoke/Starting Problems 700 1989

Hi All,

looking for some help to diagnose problem with my volvo. I don't want to spend a lot of money on fixing this.

1989 740 Turbo Intercooler Estate B230ET 202K Miles.

Observations:

Problem started during spell of cold weather.
Some leakage beneath the engine on my driveway - not sure what.
Car started ok and went about 6 miles before I noticed one or two shudders.
When parked noticed some coming from under the hood - couldn't tell exactly where from - went on for about 5 minutes.
Returned to car about 8 hours later and had a little difficulty getting started.
Once started noticed shuddering again (almost like misfiring) but car still driveable - although noticeable lack of power.
5 miles on car stalled with a lot of white smoke coming from the exhaust.
Tried to restart, and was able to get restarted after about 2 - 3 minutes trying - again smoke from exhaust but not enough power to drive the car.
Eventually stalled again. Tried restarting several times with the same behaviour.

Any ideas what I should be looking for ?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Gerry.
