A while back, I replaced the radiator in the car. After installing it and topping up the coolant, I fired up the engine and let it run. Having not done this myself before, I was somewhat surprised when there came a howling noise from what seemed to be the water pump. My buddy assured me that it was due to a lack of coolant in the pump and that when the t-stat opened the noise would go away. Sure enough, after the car warmed up, the noise subsided and I didn't hear it again. New rad. sprung a leak so I once again needed to replace it. Afterwards, same howl until the car warmed up, then it went away.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and the car starts howling on start up the majority of the time I crank it up. I get under the hood and find coolant pooling in the splash pan. Not a lot, but enough to indicate a leak. It appeared to be coming from the Pump, so I figure I have a pump going bad and replaced it ten or twelve days ago. That seemed to do the trick. No more pooling coolant and no howl.
Until this morning, when I started up the car and the howling has reapeared.
Now I am wondering if the howling ever was the water pump to begin with. It certainly seemed to be coming from there when I checked the first go 'round.
There does not seem to be coolant accumulating in the splash pan, so that leak seems to have been cured. That's not to say that there isn't some other leak somewhere that I haven't found yet.
Any thoughts?
Any other parts that would cause such symptoms?
