960 transmission cooler leak & subsequent transmission damage 900 1993

I recently acquired a 960 24v (automatic) and got a mechanic to check it over. He told me that the bit of the radiator which cools the transmission (transmission cooler?! - sorry, don't know a lot about cars) is cracked and has leaked water into the transmission. He also says that the transmission is now beyond repair & it's just a matter of time before it fails completely. The car runs ok, occasional hard shifts & also occasionally refusing to engage transmission when going back to low speed after a period of higher speed cruise (like it's in neutral), but basically seems ok. The price he quotes to fix it is almost as much as I paid for the car... Does anyone know if what he says is likely to be true? Thanks for any help.
