Light Car Wreck = Major Transmission Work ? ! ? 200 1991

My 1991 Volvo 240 was at a traffic intersection, in DRIVE, with brake pressed down. I was hit from behind by a 22-yr old man, driving his father's Lexus SC400. My rear bumper is pushed in a few inches. And I cannot put the gear in PARK anymore!!!

The wreck caused the gears to be shifted by a half inch. Now, PARK=reverse, REVERSE=neutral, and NEUTRAL=drive.

The young man (and his mother, who arrived a few minutes later) wants to fix it without insurance company involvement. Any suggestions on how to repair this? Is this a major transmission job? Or can a shop easily fix it?

YES, I got a police report . . . and NO, the Lexus SC400 front bumper was not dented, not even scratched!!! I am impressed by that Lexus bumper!
