radio problems 700 1986

This is probably not related to your problem, but is something to think about anyway. I'm in the habit of keeping my cellphone in the compartment just under the radio. As I drive the car, the phone has to negotiate with cell towers as it moves from one cell to the other. Each time this happens it causes a ticking sound in the radio, which is RF interference into the audio preamp on the radio. I find it sort of interesting to listen to, but then I'm hopelessly geeky.
