Dent in door! Ahgg! 700 1990

After a really strange couple days that actually turned out really good, I found a dent in my left rear door like 8 inches across! I have no idea how it got there, and there's no scratch or anything, although I'll look again in the light tomorrow, just the damn dent. I've only had this car for 3 months, and it's my first car, so yeah it freaked me out. Anyway, I figure before taking it to someone, I would open up the panel and try to pop it out myself. The dent's about 5 inches tall and starts right at the window sill. Is this a bad idea, am I going to screw something up? If I can do it myself, should I do anything besides push it out by hand?

Thanks very much,
Richard
