If somebody didn't mention is already, it sounds like the ground wire is bad. Attatches to a post down low on the back of the unit. 8mm bolt.

If the wire is rotted too badly to enable a crimp on of a new terminal, ignore it and make up a new wire to ground the alternator directly to on of the engine block bolts of the bracket for the alternator.
