Based on feedback via long-distance, it appears as though the speedo cable is gone. I have ordered a replacement through VolvoWorld. My in-laws are not willing to bring the car up so that I could directly diagnose and repair. Oh well, let's hope the mechanic working on it actually knows what he is doing!
