PCV AND OIL TRAP QUESTION

I have oil leaking from behind the timing belt cover - I assume it is coming from the cam seal. From what I can tell, the first thing to do is check the PCV system to make sure that it isn't causing oil to blow by the seal. Qustion is - What exactly do I need to do to make sure that it is operating. Is pulling the two hoses and making sure they are clear enough (one to intake manifold and one to turbo) or do I need to get into the oil trap and make sure it is clear too. If so, what is involved in that? Am I going to have to remove the manifold to get to it? I'd rather not if I could help it.

Thanks
Sam
