OBD2 scanner purchase? S90-V90

I am planning to buy a OBD2 for my 1996 960. In checking the web I find many scanners for a little under $150. I also see that you can get software and a cable so you can use your Palm Pilot for this. The price is about the same.
Could someone in the know advise me which way to go. I'm not sure what the Palm software will and will not do.
