Hi all,
I have a '91 740 with 121,000 miles. It is my very first Volvo.
It seems to have a cursed electrical system. My latest problem involves the brake lights and shift lock. Yesterday I got in the car and found the shift lock was not disengaging. After driving a while in bumper to bumper traffic it became obvious I also had no brake lights (second time this has happened; first was the bulb failure relay).
Luckily I found that it was just a blown fuse (#4) marked "stop light/
shift lock" @ 15A. I replaced it and all was well until a today. I've
been watching the 3rd brake light in the rearview and saw it on when I
parked at the store. Came out and couldn't get out of park, and no
brake light. Checked the fuse, and it's blown again. Put a 20A in
against my better judgement.
Any ideas what could cause this? The wiring harness in the trunk looks
fine now and looked very good when I had my last brake light problem.
My best guess is that the solenoid that locks the shifter might be going
bad and it's drawing too much current. I have a Chilton's manual which
would better be used to wipe a part of my anatomy I won't mention here.
Where is the solenoid? How does it work? Does it engage/disengage with
every touch of the brake pedal? When I was troubleshooting my last
problem, I found that one wire from the brake pedal switch went to a
small purple relay(?), what is that? I'd like to temporarily unhook
the shiftlock to see if the fuse stops blowing.
The only other possibly related items are that my reverse lights are
starting to go intermittent, and my ignition switch seems a bit flaky
at times.
I've been through the archives here and all I've turned up is some
problem that later 850's had with a microswitch...
Thanks in advance for any help! And if anyone can recommend a good
shop in Essex County, NJ for some stalling when warm issues that would
be a bonus.
