Intermittent Starting 700

Last week I noticed that my 1990 740 (16 valve, 135,000 miles) took a little more cranking before it would start. Several days later it failed to start on the first try and barely started on the second try. The following day I drove it for a short distance and when I tried to start it again....no go. After sitting overnight it started up like a champ, but later in the day it once again refused to start. I have replaced the noise supressor relay and the fuel pre-pump and sock filter in the tank which didn't help. I have a new main fuel pump ordered and it arrives tomorrow. The battery is only a few months old and the starter cranks just fine. My gut tells me it's the main fuel pump (mine is original), but the car runs fine after it has started and doesn't stall. Any Ideas???? Thanks in advance for any help!!
