engine revs, dies, starts again, instruments/signals/stereo on off HELP 700

Ok here goes, my 88 740 is having what seems to be a mid-life crisis. This problem started about two weeks ago and came on all of the sudden. When the engine is running, the engine will die for a fraction of a second and will come back on and rev to about 2000rpm before doing the same thing over and over... WHEN THE ENGINE DIES, all power to the car goes off... instrument lights, turn signals, stereo etc... the tachometer goes crazy the entire time.

Each time this happens, the fuel pump relay engages.

In fact, with the engine off, the fuel pump relay will engage each time the brake pedal is pressed.

Where do I start here? Does anyone have any suggestions?

THis does not seem like a fuel problem... nor ignition... It sounds like a bad ground somewhere, but for the life of me I don't know where to look.

can anyone help me out?
