74 164e :Dying Alternators? 140-160

Hello I'm new to this site and forum. My question: Ive been having problems with the alternator in my 74 164e. The previous owner had installed a unit from a GM(i think),I believe this is a common practice since the Bosch alternators are so expensive. The problem is they seem to last about a year and then they stop charging. I've replaced it twice and now going for the third time. I'm thinking that maybe this alt. cant handle the output of heater and lights etc. What alternators are a good substitute for the Bosch unit. Also the blue high beam warning light seems to be on when the high beams are not ...would this cause a continuous drain even if the lights were off. Any input would be appreciated.
