random orbital buffers

I read on the link in the FAQ that random orbital buffers are not recommended as they may edge the paint (wear through the painted surface to metal), is this true, if so what precautions do you take? What types of pads do you use? Do you have a 10 inch or 6 inch (random orbital buffer, that is)?
