New wheels/tires for the 965 - any experiences w/ 16 or 17 in wheels? 900 1994

I'm getting new wheels and tires for the 94 965. The tires are shot on the stock wheels and I want something larger and more apealing. Since my wife drives the car most of the time and we do haul the kiddies and their stuff, my better judgement says to only go with 16's but I want 17's. I'm buying through discount tire direct and they recommend a 205/55-16 tire. Can someone talk me out of the 17's. I've hit hidden potholes with my 18x8's and no damage but since the wifey is driving she will definitely hit ALL the potholes - familiar or not. Damnit, this car and I really want 17's.
