OD kicks off when I press accelerator 1983 240 DL 200 1983

Howdy. I posted about a week ago with an overdrive that had gone from intermittent (needed ~10 miles on the highway till it stayed on) to not working at all. I found the not-working-at-all problem was that the switch wires were severed where they go under the carpet from the shifter.

Now the overdrive will only come on if I don't press the accelerator at all - I get up to about 65 mph in 4th, take my foot off the pedal, press the button, the OD comes on. It will stay on as long as I coast, but as soon as I press the pedal even lightly, the OD kicks off.

Any ideas? Would my having driven it on the highway without the OD for several months screwed anything up? Thanks for your comments.
