How much of a DIYer is a paint job?

I am trying to sell my 90 760. It has a crappy peeling clear coat on the hood (damn lazy PO, through some wax on the sucker). I'd like to do it myself so I can assure a quality job and acquire the tools for less than paying some buthole who will paint my headlights. I have painted with an air compressor and gun way back but not a car. Can anyone suggest a reference to use and also a paint supplier? Remember I'll be painting the hood and I am not going to keep the car. However, I need to do a good job to preserve my karma. Thanks for the compressor recomendations, I am steering away from the package deal.
