can balljoints break on 700 700

I was talkin with my parts guy and he told me that ball joints can actually separte while driving if they are old and that you would lose control of the car.
Is there any recommened time to change them? I thought they just get sloppy..I never heard of them breaking..but then again..I never knew the stut mount assembly could break and make a dent in my hood also...thanks..Jeffry
