Volvo Help 120-130 1966

If you want solid dependable proven and safe transportation - go with a 244 (200 series, 4dr, 4cyl). They have had the same body for over 15 years. Last model year was 1993. There are plenty of sport upgrades, the turbo goes like stink, the intercooler turbe, even more-so.

I have been driving 200 series Volvos since 1986. Started with a 1980 wagon - my wife won't think of switching to anything else. She says that wagon has been growing along with the family. We have not had to get a pick-up truck yet.

The 1990-93 models are solid, and quiet, but being an older body style, they are a bit noisier at highway speeds.

One major downside to the 200 series is that if a car was exposed to winter salt and had not been rustproofed, they tend to rust out. After 1986, Volvo went to a galvanized body dip, and especially with the sedans, the rust was diminished - but not altogether eliminated. If you find one that is original paint and has no rust - then you are off to the races...

In the early 80's, Volvo started making the 700 series. Overall, it was a drastic body style departure from the staid 200 series.

If you want absolute luxury - find a 900 series Volvo - this is the evolution of the 700 series - a refinement over the 700's. I'm not sure if you would find one for < $6000.

Stay away from 6 cylinder V-6 Volvos. They are an aluminum Renault/joint venture engine. The cam rockers go quickly, and overall it is not a reliable engine like the VOlvo cast iron 4 cylinder.

When looking for a Volvo, the numbering system goes as follows.

THe first digit is the series 2= 200 series, 7=700 series, etc.

THe second digit is the engine designation. 4= 4cyl. 6= 6 cyl.

THe 3rd digit is the # of doors. 2=2dr, 4=4dr, 5=5dr(wagon).

so a 245 is a 200 series, 4 cyl engine, station wagon.

GL and DL refer to trim levels. After about the mid 80's they tried to do away with the 242, 244, 245 designations and only had DL or GL sticker plates.

Cars to look for include: 244, 944, 940.

Cars to avoid: 700 series, 264, 964, 960.

This is my opinion gathered over 15 years of being a Volvonian. Thereare many out there with other experiences and opinions. I only provide this as a starting point.

Also, search the web - there are plenty of Volvo owners with websites - a bit of pre-purchase curiosity will really pay off.

One thing - most Volvo owners are extremely helpful.

Good luck.
