Loud valve (s) when idle upon first start (92 964) 900

I have a 92 960 sedan 124,000 miles. When I first start the car in the morning (40F) the engine sound good for about a minute then there is a very loud tapping noise. It is a valve I think. The noise usually stays up till 3000 rpm (in park) and the noise usually goes away after I drive a while.

I have tried 5,000 rpm drive for 10 minutes. No help. Does this engine need valves adjusted? My independant mechanic says "no" (he is very good & has exp with many volvos)

I do not drive hard (or above 3000 rpm) until engine is warm. Then I have a 60 mile 75 MPH commute to work.

Any ideas? Should I be concerned?

Thanks for the help.

John
