Ignition Modification for 122. 120-130 1967


I have been having some problems with what I think is my car's ignition. A week ago Wednesday I had to get it towed home from my work place. I went out, and put the key in the ignition, and nothing. Not even a click. Since the lights and wipers worked just fine, I knew it wasn't the battery. I did all the things I should have done, went out and pounded the starter with a metal rod, ect, and still ended up with having to get it towed home. Once home, the next day, it started up. I still know that something is amiss, as there is a hesitation of about a half a second after I turn the key, so I think the ignition is on it's way out.

Assuming that it is not a loose wire or something similar, Rob the Mechanic suggested installing a switch under the dash rather than a new ignition. He said it is a lot cheaper, and you solve the problem of breaking off keys in the ignition. (For those of you not familiar with 122's, the keys are very flimsy, and it is easy to do this.) Then I would just put the key to start position, and flip the switch under the dash. It seems like a good solution to me, especially if it is cheaper and the key thing is just and extra bonus. (Although very careful, I HAVE had a key break off in the ignition. Luckily I got it out) I am wondering if any of you folks out there have any feedback on the idea? i figure I can always switch it baqck at a later date if I want to.

Please let me know your opinions on this move. I think I will try this unless I hear a lot of vociferous feedback from you guys. Thanks.
