740 Overdrive Understanding 700

Hi Everyone

I was wondering if you people could help me
understand the 740 overdrive better. I have
heard from sources that it engages into 3rd
gear. And from other sources that it is the
4th gear. With my car, I can engage it but
it will only last till about 5500rpm, then it
drops out. Is there a way to keep it in overdrive?
and limit the rpms before the redline. I guess
another question is: would it be possible to
control what gear the overdrive takes place in.
Im new to the inner workings on cars, so pls
no flames on my stupidity, but I already know
Volvo owners are nice people. Thanks for reading.
