AMM question--long 'hose'-exhaust to air filter--disconnect?

OK-that long "silver-ish" colored large diameter "hose" that runs from under the exhaust manifold to the bottom of the air filter to warm up the air to the AMM--I have been told to disconnect it at the exhaust-leave it hanging there-maybe tie it down so it won't flop around---it does not go IN to anything at the exhaust side--it's basically an "oven"--to make the air hotter to the AMM--. That hot air tends to cause the AMM filament to burn out quicker, and in my area it is not so cold as that I really need it--except for smog inspection time. Sounds like OK advice--but wanted to run it by the BB for comments. The AMM, as many of us know is really expensive--prolonging its life seems like a good idea. Comments? Thank you. again.
