'90 Volvo 740 wagon tranny problems

I doubt that towing the small load caused a tranny failure. The AW transmission is very robust and can last for hundreds of thousands miles. Mine has 265K and works perfectly. How many miles on yours? Have not known a tranny to produce squealing sounds. Could it be belts or harmonic balancer? Can you explain delayed shift, what gears? This could be caused by the kick down cable.
Surging? Do you mean a downshift or slipping? Overdrive (4th gear)working correctly?
I guess what I am saying is that you should really confirm tranny failure before changing it. If you do decide to change tranny consider changing the rear main engine seal while in there and front tranny seal as well.
