Strut mount question 200 1976

First of all, just want to say that this is an amazing site, the archives are very helpful and a lot of fun to read. My question is this: recently I noticed a deep crack in the top of my 244's right side strut mount. It's forming in the visible rubber part, about 1/2 inch from the cap that covers the center nut. What I was wondering is, does this mean that the strut could break through the mount and collapse? It doesn't really make sense to me that the struts could be supported only by rubber, it seems that there should be a metal support and then some sort of bushing between it and the strut, but I really have no idea what the whole assembly contains. My Hanes manual is sadly lacking on details about the mount. Thank you, Mike.
