I just bought a '92 944Turbo with 226K on the odometer.
I suspect the engine has been rebuilt of replaced recently (very clean, sounds good and accelerates fine....turbo kicks in fast!).
The car is getting ~15MPG around town and a little bit of highway each day. To my knowledge, I should certainly be getting
at least 20MPG around town and 25+MPG on the highway.
Here is what I've done......
1. Replaced the air filter. It was filthy (and I took out the sponge aparatus), but that didn't really help.
2. Checked the O2 Sensor with a voltmeter. It constantly fluctuated between .19 and .79 volts as it should (thanks to JRPagano on TurboBricks for walking me through this test)
3. Oil change (not that it would help, I just always do it right away when buying a used car....the oil looks great 500 miles later)
What's next?
-Could it be a clogged cat. converter?
-Could it be a bad water temp. sensor?
-Could it be the spark plugs and/or wires?
-Could it be the distributor cap and rotor?
-Could it be the air mass meter?
-Could it be bad engine compression?
Facts:
-The car accelerates fine, the turbo works great, spools up fast.
-The car idles steady at ~800RPM
-The car handles speeds up to 80MPH no problem (haven't had a chance to go faster yet)
-The car doesn't run hot
I know all of the above can affect MPG, but getting ~15 really concerns me.
Did I buy one of the few junk-bricks out there?
Thanks in advance to everyone who took the time to read this and respond with your thoughts!!!!!
Keep Rollin'
