Coolant filling proceedure 700 1986

Hello Brickers,
I've got a 1986 turbo wagon and just replaced some coolant hoses. Now I'm trying to fill the durned thing up, and it only takes a quart of coolant. I've searched the wisdom of the past here on brickboard, and found one reference to removing the thermostat housing to purge the block of air - is there a better way? I squeezed the hoses for 10 minutes with little effect. I ran the engine for a minute to spin the pump, but the fluid level remained full. This car does not have any blockages; it drained OK and was staying cool before I worked on it.

Thanks for any help!
