Your mechanic must be planning a hell of an extravagant holiday season. Why is he your mechanic, at those prices? For the tailgate repair, maybe $50 in supplies and a 6 ft. steplader are needed. For the rack, get rebuild at $250 and plug it in. I bet the tranny is fine. But the other guys have covered all this better.
