Tailgate would not stay up 200 1989

Just needed to vent: The original tailgate support shocks in my trusty wagon were retired a few weeks ago, replaced with a shiny new pair from IPD. Yesterday (one of the coldest days here in Boston this year so far) I noticed that the tailgate does not like staying up. The shocks still feel nice and firm (unlike the old ones - the main reason I changed them), but the damn thing just would not stay open!!! Any suggestions?
