Advancing timing for more power--- anybody have any advice? More power = more engine wear? 200 1987

I have heard that you can simply advance the timing a few degrees and get a few extra ponies. What about gas mileage? My 245 gets such great mileage that I hate to mess with it if it is going to be eating a lot more gas, but it could sure use some extra power. I think that is one reason that the b230f engines last forever is because they are so dowmn on power. minimal power=minimal engine wear.
