engine limping

Hi Friends...I have 91 740 turbo that is starting ok but quickly the gas seems to stop flowing..engine almost cuts out and then surges forward and then dies out again (like you are forgetting about the clutch except this is an automatic). After a few minutes of this, the car only idles and engine stalls as soon as you put it in gear...any suggestions? Air Mass Meter? fuel pump? clogged cat? This is my sons car and I just noticed he lost the gas cap..could that have anything to do with it? Tried the limp home method of disconnecting the AMM and no change. Thanks for your help
