New shift nob...OD wires 200 1984

Hey, I really want to buy one of those aftermarket metal shifters but I have an OD switch on top. I am sure that I can reroute the wire and hook it up to a regular switch somewhere. I have given a good onceover and cannot find the wire. Has anyone done this? All I need to know is how to get the wire out from under the carpet. Thanks, and if you have done any other aftermarket interior/exterior stuff, let me hear about it.

Thanks
Robert
