loose ground straps behind head on B230 700 1989

Think I may have solved poor running and stumbling...both ground straps at the rear of the head that attach to the rear firewall were completely off. I reconnected them to the rear cam cover bolts and car seems to run Ok. Will road test tomorrow.
BTW, what is the purpose of these ground straps? For the alternator or the battery only. Are these the same as the ones on the bottom of the 240 series engines?
I've already ordered a new Crank Position Sensor, one less thing to go wrong.
GIA,
el Raidman
