Intermitent cold start problem ('85 244 Turbo) 200 1985

Hi, well again I'm having problems with my 244 Turbo. Sometimes it just won't start when it's cold, and then other times it fires right up no problem. I rebuilt the control pressure regulator (a.k.a. warm up regulator, or fuel pressure regulator). It helped some when I did that, at least it was better when it does start. One thing it does a lot is once I start it it revs up to about 1200 or so (like it should) but then it just drops down and dies, but it will start right back up and run fine (er, as well as it does) after that. I don't know if it's related but at any time when it's running when I let in the clutch and off the gas the idle drops down from wherever it was to about 400 then catches itself. Anyone have any suggestions? Although I may have to, I'd rather not have to g through and test everything (as the Bentley says to). It's been a real problem (makes want to *gasp* sell the car). Thanks
