I'm back, with a Volvo!

"Why do the later tailgates corrode so much?"

I'm not sure I understand the specifics of your question.

My '86 tailgate is in good shape compared to my old '82 tailgate. The '91 tailgate is in better shape than the '86 tailgate.

It might have to do with mileage, it might have to do with age, it might have to do with improved manufacturing processes, it might have to do with improved design, it might have to do with improved materials. Or any or all of the above.

The '91 has the newer style glass -- no recess -- and the washer nozzle is at the top (which means I must do a little drilling if I use this t-gate on the '86).

OTOH, the '91 tailgate included good hinges but bad harnesses. At no extra cost.
