1989 740Turbo Non start, no spark 700

Hello

I have a 1989 740 Turbo wagon, automatic, When I got the car, the distributor was removed. I replaced it with one from my parts car but have been unable to get the car to start, except on one occasion where it started and ran for 15 mins, then stopped dead. The car will not fire on ether. The test lamp stays lit on the coil leads while cranking. Is there a reference sensor that could be bad? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You
