Engine Troubles 120-130 1967

Hi Everyone...

Well I just finished putting the finishing touches on a master cylinder conversion for my '67 122 and bled the last bit of air out of the system. Great!
Except for when I took it for a test drive...Driving along and there is an ominous sound from under the hood from my original B18D followed by bright white puffs of smoke from the tailpipe with an antifreeze smell followed by some detonation. I shut the car off and it ran on for about 30 seconds. Two questions:

1) Does this sound like a blown head gasket?

2) And if so-is this a project that a non-engine tech, mechanically inclined person like me should take on?

Thanks

Symon
